Postcard from Brighton Museum

Susan from Brighton Museum sent us this ‘postcard’ from the Museum’s art collection with some information about it.

She says: "The sofa was based on the lips of Mae West who was a film star. This photo inspired artist Salvador Dali to paint a portrait of her, using her face as a room.

This is the Portrait he painted called: Mae West’s Face which May be Used as a Surrealist Apartment , Salvador Dalí, 1934–35

Then a man called Edward James who lived in West Sussex decided to get some of the sofas made. You can find out a bit more about it here

Hope you are all well.

Very Best Wishes, Susan Eskdale
